NHN Japan’s free voice call and messenger app LINE has passed more than 15 million downloads, with strong user base growth in non-English speaking countries in the Middle East, South East Asia and Europe.

LINE, which allows users to make voice calls and send messages for free regardless of country or operator, reached the landmark download figure seven months after launch. The app has been downloaded an additional five million times since Christmas Day, at a rate of roughly one million downloads per week.

The app is available on both iOS and Android and has been highly placed in the free social networking apps category chart in Apple’s App Store across Europe. NHN Japan now plans to launch a version for tablet computers and PCs and aims to improve voice call quality of the service.
