LINE Corporation, the company behind the mobile messaging platform of the same name, reported a healthy year-on-year increase in revenue in the third quarter, as it continued to make progress outside of Asia.

Revenue from the core LINE app totaled JPY20.9 billion ($192 million), a 104.2 per cent improvement compared to a year ago. Total revenue for the period was JPY23 billion, up 82.9 per cent.

The LINE app now has around 170 million monthly active users, with 87 million of those located in the top three markets of Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. It also has 25 million users in the US and 30 million in India.

It now has 11 countries with more than 10 million users.

Until recently, the company only published the less accurate engagement metric of registered users, a figure which now stands at 560 million.

LINE has looked to capitalise on business models that have been successful in Japan by expanding them in other markets where it has high active usage, such as Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand.

In addition, the company has worked to provide localised content and services that fit with the needs of consumers in individual countries.

Earlier this month, the company announced a raft of new services that will be accessible within the LINE messaging app.

These include mobile payment product LINE Pay, LINE Maps for Indoor, LINE Taxi, and a new venture with Sony Music Entertainment to create a subscription-based music streaming service.

The sticker business continued to grow during Q3, fueled by the LINE Creators Market, which was launched in May to enable users to create and sell stickers.

LINE made efforts to expand its gaming presence in Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, while its advertising businesses saw an increase in the number of companies adopting LINE Business Connect, which integrates messaging functionality with business CRM systems.

Akira Morikawa, CEO, said the increasing need for “an infrastructure more closely lined to people’s daily lives” has driven the company’s rapid growth.

He added that the company plans to accelerate international expansion.
