LINE Corp reached one billion downloads for its family of apps, three years after its mobile messaging service was launched.

The LINE messaging platform (which now has 470 million registered users) was quickly expanded after its launch to include free calls and stickers.

The extensive user base built up through messaging has driven uptake of other apps and services added to the platform, across communication, digital content, games, tools and media.

LINE currently offers 63 services that are integrated with the messaging platform, including LINE Camera, which has more than 90 million downloads, after being launched in April 2012. A total of 14 apps have achieved more than 10 million downloads.

Titles from the LINE Game portfolio have also proved popular, with the LINE Pop puzzle game, released in November 2012, leading the way with 43 million downloads. Nine games have passed 10 million downloads.

Most recently LINE added video calls and LINE Premium Call, which allows users to make affordable domestic and international phone calls to landlines and mobile phones.

LINE’s claimed 470 million registered users puts it on par with the likes of WhatsApp (500 million monthly active users) and WeChat (396 million).

Akira Morikawa, the company’s CEO, said in April that it is aiming to reach one billion users of its mobile messaging app during 2015, more than doubling its current user base. Morikawa previously set a target of reaching at least 500 million registered users by the end of 2014.

It was reported earlier this month that LINE is looking to capitalise on its impressive user growth with plans for an IPO to take place as soon as November.

Sources told Bloomberg that LINE is considering listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and either the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq. Sources said the company could have a market value of more than $9.8 billion.
