Messaging app Kik has been updated to add browser functionality, in a move intended to enable users to “explore anything on the mobile web” without the need to leave the app – potentially increasing usage time and engagement.

Unsurprisingly, the company highlighted the social possibilities this offers, including the ability to share web content with other Kik users, again without the need to access another app.

The company said the browser works like any other, although with webpages “optimised for Kik” listed first.

Late last year, Kik reached the 100 million registered user mark. Other enhancements to its app beyond its core messaging functionality includes Kik Cards, which enable users to share richer content.
