The team behind “knowledge sharing” app Kifi is to join Google, bolstering the search giant’s Spaces group sharing product.

Google’s engineering director Eddie Kessler said the Kifi team has expertise in organising shared content and conversations and will build features that improve Spaces.

Spaces launched in May. It allows users to create a group of contacts to discuss a particular topic. It is integrated with Google search, Chrome, YouTube, and Google Photos, so users can find and share articles, videos, and photos from within the app.

But the app hasn’t been an overwhelming success: App Annie ranks it at around 577 in the US iOS App Store and 284 in the US Android rankings.

Kifi wrote: “We see a lot of alignment to Google’s mission to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Our team will be joining the Spaces team at Google to build solutions focused on improving group sharing, conversation, and content finding.”

The existing Kifi service will not become part of Google, and will only be available for the next few weeks.
