Indian new-entrant operator Jio Infocomm has signed up more than one million users for its Jio Chat app, as it prepares to launch more products into the market.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of parent company Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani, chairman and MD of the parent, said: “In just a few weeks of operation, Jio Chat has now over a million active users, and these million users were acquired without any paid promotion or paid advertising whatsoever. And that speaks for the quality of the product.”

New products in the pipeline, the executive said, are Switch and Walk, which enables smartphone owners to copy contacts and data between phones, and Jio Drive, a cloud storage offering.

While Jio has rolled out significant infrastructure ahead of its anticipated service launch, the company is putting apps and content at the heart of its proposition.

Stating that entertainment and news “has been, and will always remain, a huge opportunity”, the executive said that the company is set to launch “a suite of exciting and engaging, exclusive and entertaining digital media products”.

“First comes Jio Play. With this, one will be able to watch HD TV, anytime, anywhere on your smartphone,” he said, promising “hundreds of channels across categories and languages”.

News, magazine and streaming music products are also in the pipeline.
