German mobile cloud gaming company itsmy has unveiled an HTML5 gaming service for set-top boxes and Smart TV that allows users to play cloud-based games they have already purchased for their mobile devices on these other platforms.

As well as being able to play the games on their web-connected TVs, players will also be able to access social features such as friend lists, messaging, challenges and achievements.

The service will initially feature a catalogue of 20 itsmy games – including Solitaire (pictured) – which can either be played on itsmy.tv via a web browser or through smartphone apps offered by most TV and set-top box manufacturers. The technology allows a number of users on different devices to play against each other.

“In contrast to the online streaming services, we have developed our cloud platform in HTML5 which runs perfectly with low and high bandwidth. Our server side platform technology enables us to deliver on the fly the best possible HTML5 code,” said itsmy CTO Jukka Saarelainen.

The API for the smart TV technology will be launched to game developers by the end of the year.
