INQ, the UK-based company behind tailored magazine app Material and social media aggregator SO.HO, ceased operations today.

In a statement, the company said the edition of Material published on 28 January was the last, while SO.HO, which launches Facebook, Twitter and Instagram directly from smartphone homescreens, will continue to function but not be updated.

The company stressed that neither app would retain personal data about users or their social network usage.

“It’s been truly exciting for us to turn Material and SO.HO from ideas we dreamed up into functioning products used by people across the globe,” the company said.

Material attracted positive reviews but failed to compete successfully with the likes of Flipboard and Pulse. Facebook launched a similar app, Paper, this week.

INQ also launched some of the earliest Facebook-focused smartphones, the Cloud Touch and Cloud Q, in 2011. With these failing to take off, the company switched its focus to mobile apps around a year ago.
