The Indian government has expressed concerns about the security implications of the increasing use of Chinese-made smartphone apps, according to the Economic Times.

Messaging apps WeChat and UC Browser have attracted government attention around possible data security risks and the practices of the app makers. Both apps are in the top 10 most downloaded free apps in Google Play in India.

A senior home ministry official told the Economic Times that the government is in discussions with the telecom department and Cyber Emergency Response Team, although no official communication has been sent to the companies in question.

Rakesh Singh, a joint secretary who oversees internal security at the home ministry, said the discussions are broader than just WeChat and UC Browser with the organisation set to release “concrete observations” soon.

Tarun Vijay, an Indian MP, said that the government must conduct a review of these Chinese apps due to their ability to access personal data of millions of smartphone users in India.

Chinese infrastructure firms Huawei and ZTE have previously been asked by Indian authorities to disclose their ownership details amid concerns that harmful software has been installed on equipment.
