Mobile social gaming company Gree plans to boost the compatibility of its platform to work with HTML5-based web apps, enabling game developers to distribute games as web apps to users around the world.

It said that the move will provide developers with an approach that best suits “their technical capabilities and the characteristics of each game” and provide a cost-effective way of distributing products globally.

The move is said to be a response to the evolving smartphone industry, where cross platform development is becoming more important.

An open beta of the HTML5 functionality will be rolled out in November, with Gree planning to launch its own social games as web apps. Gree is also introducing web-browser optimised functionality for the Gree social networking service, which is available in 14 languages.

The company is also introducing functionality to optimise its social networking service for mobile browsers as well as new payment options including PayPal, credit card payment and direct billing with 166 operators.
