Online special offers company Groupon has acquired Kima Labs, maker of the Barcode Hero barcode reading app and TapBuy mobile payment app.

The Barcode Hero website announced the news and said the Barcode Hero iPhone app and website had shut down. Users will be able to download their data from the service – such as product recommendations and wishlists – until 16 March.

Although the TapBuy website doesn’t refer to the acquisition, Kima Labs co-founder Blake Scholl told TechCrunch that the service would be also be wound down on “a longer schedule” than Barcode Hero.

TapBuy offers daily deals for around 100 brands and is able to process transactions by grouping purchases together and adding coupons.

Groupon also confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch. ”Kima Labs has developed popular apps that make mobile transactions easier, more fun and more of a possibility for merchants,” the company said in a statement.

A figure for the deal wasn’t disclosed.
