Deals company Groupon has acquired last-minute hotel booking app Blink as it looks to expand its Groupon Getaways travel business.

Madrid-based Blink specialises in same-day hotel bookings and has 2,000 hotel partners in eight European countries.

The app will be rebranded as ‘Blink by Groupon’ with the team operating separately to integrate other services offered by Groupon Getaways. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“The combination of a fantastic mobile app, same-day inventory management for properties and a team that is obsessed with mobile and last-minute travel will help us further expand our travel business as the go-to destination for great deals on great places to stay,” said Aaron Cooper, senior vice president of Groupon Getaways.

Groupon recently enlisted the help of app engagement company Fiksu to market its apps globally. Fiksu will be the exclusive app marketing platform for the deals company, to accelerate its expansion into local markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Groupon saw seven million app downloads during the first quarter of 2013 and has a mobile presence in 42 countries.
