Japanese mobile social networking company Gree announced plans to launch a new platform by mid-2012, with the aim of providing a “global social gaming experience and more robust features for players and developers.”

The company announced few details of the plan, other than it will “leverage OpenFeint and Gree assets and will bring together Western and Asian mobile social markets with a goal of reaching over one billion users.”

In a statement, Naoki Aoyagi, CEO of Gree, said: “This new platform allows our partners to focus on increasing engagement and revenue, while continuing to offer the most comprehensive free-to-play gaming experience.”

Earlier this year, Gree announced an international expansion strategy which will see it creating new international subsidiaries in five markets, in order to build its collaborations with local partners and to provide support for local game developers.

Gree also acquired Chinese online community OpenFeint during 2011, a deal which it said gave it “the world’s largest cross platform social gaming network with over 115 million users worldwide.” This included plans to standardise the specifications for apps across platforms, to provide developers with a wider addressable user base.
