Revenue from in-app purchases in Google Play has increased seven-fold in the past year, with many of the highest grossing apps in Google Play now offering in-app purchasing, TechCrunch reports.

Speaking at last week’s Google I/O developer conference, Google Play product manager for commerce and monetisation, Ibrahim Elbouchikhi, added that average revenue per Android user is up 2.5 times compared with a year ago.

The company said that it had seen a doubling of revenue each quarter for apps that use the subscription option introduced a year ago. Apps using subscription as their sole revenue generator, such as Pandora, are now making an appearance in the top-grossing apps list.

Other trends highlighted include a greater likelihood of users making in-app purchases on tablets compared to smartphones. Tablets have a 1.7 times greater purchase rate than phones.

In addition, apps that have been updated to take advantage of the latest changes to the Android platform generate 2.2 times as much revenue as older versions.
