Google acquired news summarisation app Wavii for around $30 million, according to Reuters.

Seattle-based Wavii was also subject to interest from Apple, the publication said, with the iPhone maker looking at the potential to incorporate Wavii’s natural language technology into its Siri voice-activated personal assistant.

The acquisition comes after Yahoo also spent $30 million to acquire Summly, a British-based app that performs a similar function to Wavii.

Both apps aim to improve how consumers access news by condensing articles into a few sentences or words. This functionality is of particular interest to Google and Yahoo who both have popular news sites.

Yahoo launched a new version of its iOS app incorporating technology from Summly a month after the acquisition was announced.

The majority of Wavii’s employees are expected to move to Google’s Mountain View headquarters in California following the acquisition.
