Google Play makes revenue inroads in Spain

Going against the trend seen in the rest of Western Europe, Spain saw revenue generated by Google Play exceed that of Apple’s App Store for a number of major apps over the past six months.

Analyst firm Distimo found that the pattern in Spain is following that of Asian countries such as South Korea, where Google’s storefront is the more lucrative of the two.

Distimo found ‘The Simpsons: Tapped Out’, made by Electronic Arts, generated 56 per cent of its total revenue from Google Play in Spain, while King’s ‘Pet Resuce Saga’ took 55 per cent of revenue from the Android store.

During its first month of release, Rovio’s ‘Angry Birds Go!’ made 58 per cent of its Spanish revenue in Google Play. The picture for the game was similar in South Korea, although on a global basis the iOS version generated a greater proportion of revenue.

Of the apps cited, ‘Top Eleven’ (made by Nordeus) generated the greatest proportion of revenue in Spain from Google Play at 64 per cent.

Looking at 2013 as a whole, Apple’s App Store accounted for a total of 68 per cent of app revenue from the two stores compared to 32 per cent for Google Play in Spain.

But Google Play’s share grew significantly as the year progressed, starting at 18.2 per cent in January and reaching 39.5 per cent by December.

In South Korea, Google Play accounted for 85 per cent of revenue for the whole of 2013, with iOS on a mere 15 per cent.

In the six months to September last year, Distimo found that Google Play’s share of combined Play/Apple App Store revenue globally increased from 25 per cent to 35 per cent.
