Google is launching awards to “recognise our incredible developer community and highlight some of the best apps and games” on its Play Store, which it says reaches more than one billion Android users across 190 countries.

The awards have ten categories including ‘standout startup’ and ‘best families app’, with five nominees in each selected by a panel based on quality and innovation, as well as having had a launch or major update in the last 12 months.

Winners will be announced at Google’s I/O conference on 19 May.

Nominees for best app, which are “a true representation of beautiful design, intuitive UX and high user appeal, quality and rating” are BuzzFeed News, colouring app Colorfy, Houzz, an interior design app, TuneIn Radio and recipe app Yummly.

Apps shortlisted for best game are Clash Royale and Clash of Kings by Supercell, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, MARVEL Future Fight and Alphabear, with the last of these also nominated in the standout indie category.

Other categories include ‘best use of material design’, ‘best use of Google Play game services’, ‘early adopter’ and ‘go global’.
