Google acquired Swiss app developer Bitspin, maker of the Timely alarm clock app for Android.

In a statement on its website announcing the deal, Bitspin said it will continue “building great products that are delightful to use” and “to work as it always has”.

Timely’s interface, colour themes and sound options can all be customised by users while the app can set challenges, such as a maths problem, to help wake users up in the morning. The app recently became available for free to download from Google Play.

The developers working for the Zurich-based company are computer science graduates from ETH Zurich and gained experience in entrepreneurship and product design through working with large Swiss companies.

“Our extensive knowledge of the web and mobile platforms allows us to combine simplicity with design, creating experiences so delightful they seem like magic,” the company said on its website.

No financial information about the deal was disclosed.

The acquisition is the latest in a line of deals for Google in the mobile app space, with June’s deal to buy mapping start-up Waze, reportedly for more than $1 billion, one of the most prominent.
