Mobile social game maker Gameloft decision last year to focus on games for smartphones, tablets and smart TVs appears to be paying off, as it reported increased revenue and profit for 2011.

The company saw sales of games on smartphones increase by 64 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to the same quarter a year previously, and also launched its first freemium game for feature phones during the period, allowing it to target new customers.

Gameloft will accelerate its development strategy on multiple platforms following the growth in smartphone and tablet sales, and said it plans to launch games on more devices in 2012 than in 2011. It aims to launch more titles for feature phones and has four games in the pipeline for Apple’s latest iPad. The company already has 32 games available for Amazon’ Kindle Fire tablet.

The company reported revenue of EUR164.4 million for 2011, up 17 percent compared to 2010. Net profit for the year was EUR18.2 million, up 34 percent compared to 2010, with a net margin of 11 percent.

Gameloft has 125 million of its games installed on iOS and Android devices around the world which are used by 35 million users every month and expects another year of solid growth in 2012.

It has agreed rights to several large game franchises which its hopes will drive future growth. Titles will include those based around the DC Comics’ The Dark Knight Rises Batman film, Ice Age, Men in Black 3 and The Amazing Spider Man.

There are also plans to pursue opportunities in emerging markets with Gameloft now having games available in 100 countries. Europe represented 30 percent of the company’s sales, just ahead of North America with 29 percent. The rest of the world accounted for the remaining 41 percent.
