Location-based check-in and recommendation service Foursquare has unveiled a new version of its app that it says has been completely rebuilt to improve the service.

The new app has a new friends tab with swipeable photos, tips, lists and places that friends have saved. A ‘like’ function has been added for people to comment on friends’ activity while the app’s check-in button has now been moved to the top right of the interface.

The Explore function gives users ideas of places to go and nearby deals for their current location when they select it – doing away with the need to search – while friends that are in the vicinity are now also shown in this section. The app also tailors recommendations depending on whether users are in their home area or travelling.

Other improved features include profile history, favourite restaurants, directions and the ability to call venues, while the behind-the-scenes processes have been speeded up to improve user experience.

Foursquare said more features will be added in the coming weeks and during the summer. The new app is already available for iOS and Android devices and is due for BlackBerry in a few weeks.
