Check-in app Forecast is to close down on 1 July after its developer Hurricane Party ran out of money, reports TechCrunch.

Users of the app were contacted by Forecast developer René Pinnell and ‘Team Forecast” via an email, which said the company has run out of resources to keep the Forecast project going. “The time has come for Forecast to shut its doors. Starting on July 1, our mobile apps and website will not work,” it said.

The app was developed to provide a more sophisticated check-in experience by letting users check-in on Facebook or Foursquare before arriving at a location or allowing automatic check-ins when they arrive. Forecast’s most recent figures in February 2012 said the app had around 100,000 users.

TechCrunch noted that the check-in segment is crowded with apps and there has been some consolidation with Facebook buying Gowalla. Automated location apps in the form of Highlight and Glancee were also bought by Facebook before being shut down by the social network.

It is unclear whether Hurricane Party’s group-messaging app has also been closed.
