Facebook may finally have a plan to make money from WhatsApp by letting businesses pay to contact users of the messaging app, Bloomberg reported.

Facebook is already testing such a service for its Messenger app and it may apply this to WhatsApp as well.

Businesses on Messenger is supposed to “enhance communications and interactions between people and businesses,” the social media giant said earlier, and is still under development.

According to CFO David Wehner, the company feels “enabling B2C messaging has good business potential for us.”

“As we learn those things, I think there’s going to be opportunities to bring some of those things to WhatsApp, but that’s more longer-term than the near-term,” he added.

When Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $22 billion last year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said there were no plans to monetise the app for the next couple of years and believed the best approach to realise its potential was to focus on connecting more people.

Perhaps the time has come now, as WhatsApp hit 800 million monthly active users in April.

In other Facebook news, the company wants to introduce games on its Messenger Platform and is actively talking to developers, according to The Information, although no timeline for the roll-out has been decided.

The platform was launched in March to enable content from third-party apps to be shared via Messenger.

Uptake of apps on the platform has been slow, with third-party developers complaining of lack of user awareness.
