Dropbox will shut down two of its apps, email service Mailbox and photo sharing app Carousel, next year.
“Over the past few months, we’ve increased our team’s focus on collaboration and simplifying the way people work together. In light of that, we’ve made the difficult decision to shut down Carousel and Mailbox,” it said in a blog post.
“We think this increased focus will help us create even better experiences for you in the months and years to come,” it added.
Dropbox plans on moving some of Carousel’s features to its core Dropbox app while Dropbox Paper, an app that helps teams work together, still in beta testing phase, will incorporate “what we’ve learned from Mailbox”.
According to a Financial Times report, there is now pressure on Dropbox to “regain momentum in the face of growing competition from rivals like Google” which launched a photo app in May that hit 100 million monthly active users in five months.
Two of Dropbox’s shareholders, Fidelity Investments and BlackRock, said the company may not be able to live up to the $10 billion valuation from its fundraising round two years ago, the report added.
