Leading social games developer Digital Chocolate has raised US$12 million in series D funding, led by Intel Capital and including prior backers Sutter Hill Ventures and Bridgescale Partners. The company will use the funds to “expand its scale, cross-platform capabilities, and geographic reach”.  Currently Digital Chocolate produces games for the iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile platforms, in addition to internet platforms such as Facebook.

In 2010, the company managed 100 million mobile downloads. Last month it launched its first Android-based games via GetJar, the independent app retailer, including Millionaire City title which was the second fastest growing game title on Facebook in 2010.

The company, which is led by Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, has now raised a total of US$56 million in four investment rounds. In the three previous it raised US$22.5 million, US$13 million and US$8.4 million, respectively.
