Developers face continued wait for iOS 8 HealthKit integration

25 SEP 2014

Developers of health and fitness apps that tap into Apple’s Health app for iOS 8 will have to wait a little longer for their products to be made available, after a promised update was pulled by the iPhone maker.

The patch was aimed at solving an issue with the newly-introduced Health app, which pulls data from different third-party health and fitness apps using the HealthKit API. Apps using the API were removed from the App Store last week after a bug was identified by Apple.

However, the iOS 8.0.1 update was dropped after it became clear that some iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users had found that it stopped them from making calls, as well as disabling the TouchID fingerprint sensor used for identifying users.

The company did not say how many people had been affected but apologised for the “great inconvenience experienced by users”. It is working to prepare a new iOS 8 (iOS 8.0.2) update for release in the next few days.

Since HealthKit was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, the likes of Nike, Jawbone and MyFitnessPal have been working to integrate their apps in time for the launch of iOS 8, alongside the new iPhone 6 models.

The health and fitness features of iOS 8 were touted when Apple unveiled the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus earlier this month.

The new smartphones feature a barometer to calculate how many flights of stairs people have climbed during the day, while the Apple Watch can monitor heart rate and overall activity.

Apple recently changed its privacy rules to ensure that take-up of the increasing number of health and fitness apps are not hindered by concerns about how developers use personal data.
