DeNA to buy into Cygames

07 NOV 2012

Japanese social games company DeNA is to spend JPY7.4 billion (US$92.6 million) to acquire 20 percent of Cygames, the developer behind the game Rage of Bahamut.

The companies formed a strategic alliance in February 2012, and have “closely collaborated” on the development and marketing of mobile social games using DeNA’s Mobage platform.

In a statement, it was said that the companies aim to “strengthen their existing relationship by promoting further fusion of Cygames’ creativity and DeNA’s proven expertise in social game development and operation.”

Rage of Bahamut has been an international success for Cygames, racking up more than 3 million users outside of Japan.

It has ranked number one in the top-grossing charts in Google Play and Apple’s App Store in the US.

DeNA will acquire the shares from online entertainment company CyberAgent, which is Cygames’ majority shareholder, and Cygames board members.

Last week, DeNA announced a number of partnerships with independent game developers, intended to strengthen its Mobage portfolio.

In a recent results call, DeNA also indicated that Marvel: War of Heroes is performing well when compared to Rage of Bahamut at the same stage of its life.
