Cloud content company Brightcove announced general availability of its App Cloud, a platform for the creation of native iOS and Android apps.

The company said that it combines an open HTML5 web development model with intelligent cloud services, to accelerate app development, optimise performance, measure effectiveness, and enable dynamic updates to installed apps.

App Cloud is available in free and enterprise editions. The former enables a single user to develop and test an unlimited number of apps. The enterprise edition enables teams to develop, deploy and operate live apps in production. Enterprise subscriptions start at US$15,000, and special pricing is available for third-party developers.

Brightcove said that more than 1,200 individual users have participated in the App Cloud beta testing programme, and several resulting apps are already available. Ashley Streb, VP of technology for the company, said: “the App Cloud beta program has been very well received over the past few months, and we have been impressed by the quality, breadth and creativity of the apps developed by our beta users.

Mobile Apps Briefing spoke to Brightcove about App Cloud earlier this year, with the company noting that the solution offers “a significant opportunity for growth.”
