RIM has launched an online version of its BlackBerry App World storefront that allows users to browse and buy apps on a desktop PC before downloading and synching with a device. The move mimics the successful model deployed by Apple, which allows apps to be managed via its iTunes online store.

The new website – accessible by a BlackBerry ID log-in – allows apps to be purchased directly from the site using a range of payment options; it also includes a feature called ‘Edit My World’ which allows user accounts to synchronise app downloads directly with a BlackBerry smartphone connected to the computer. The website also allows users to read app reviews and post comments.

RIM announced late last month that it was seeing around 1.5 million app downloads per day from BlackBerry App World, roughly the same downloads currently being made via Nokia’s Ovi Store. It also claims to have 300,000 developers working on its platform and 35 million active App World users in 70 countries. The Canadian vendor launched the latest version of BlackBerry App World – version 2.0 – in July.
