Hybrid apps built using appMobi's HTML5 tools have been run by users more than 100 million times, with the technology now being used by more than 50,000 developers, the company said.

This is “indicative of the industry’s increasing shift away from proprietary native app development and toward HTML5, which is the only viable open platform for cross platform mobile app development”, it continued.

Developers are using the technology to build apps for several platforms, with many iOS developers now seeing Facebook in the role of "second platform." Most are also publishing for Android.

appMobi CEO Dave Kennedy said the company has worked hard to “fill in the missing pieces of this emerging development standard” so that HTML5 can compete "on a level playing field" with native iOS and Android on mobile devices.

Some 25 percent of appMobi developers have built three or more apps on the platform, while the average time needed to build an HTML5 hybrid app has halved over the past 12 months.

In terms of the types of app that have been built using appMobi’s technology, 40 percent are in the media category, 35 percent are games and 15 percent are for retail.

In an effort to reduce the risk for developers wanting to add cloud services to their apps, appMobi has combined its cloud services into a single bundle with a new pricing structure based on monthly active users.

Access to the services is free for the first 10,000 monthly active users of an app, after which appMobi charges the lesser of US$0.10 per monthly active user or 50 percent of revenue generated by the app.
