There are more than 5,000 apps now available for Apple TV, while apps designed for the iPad hit 1 million, the company said at its San Francisco event this week.

According to The Verge, the total App Store catalogue reached 1 million apps in 2013, when only half supported the tablet.

“Apple is still fighting for its tablet to be seen as a device that can truly be used for creation, rivaling a laptop, and it’s the increasingly good apps made for it that help make that a compelling argument,” the report suggested.

As for Apple TV, CEO Tim Cook said HBO Now, which lets users watch HBO shows, and NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) March Madness, through which live matches can be watched, were some of the most popular apps.

He said tvOS 9.2 will have features like Siri voice integration, voice-to-text, and the option to create folders to organise apps.

Apple also announced CareKit, a new software framework through which developers can help people manage their medical conditions.

CareKit will be released as an open source framework next month.

Developers of health and wellness apps are set to create apps for issues like Parkinson’s, post-surgery progress, diabetes and mental health, the company said.

Meanwhile, the iOS 9.3 iPhone update includes a password protect for Apple’s Notes app and a more personalised News app.
