Apple said that its 50 billionth app download had taken place, stating that customers are downloading titles from the App Store at a rate of more than 800 per second.

It also said that more than two billion apps are being downloaded per month, putting it slightly behind the 2.5 billion claimed by Google for Google Play this week.

The App Store opened in July 2008, with 500 apps.  It now has more than 850,000 titles, and is available in 155 countries worldwide.

“The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers. We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services.

The 50 billionth app was Say the Same Thing, from publisher Space Inch.
