Mobile app development platform Appcelerator has agreed to acquire mobile gaming and HTML5 development platform Particle Code.

The acquisition allows Appcelerator to expand its Titanium platform – currently used by 1.6 million developers – to provide a development environment for HTML5 web and hybrid apps as well as the native iOS and Android apps it currently supports.

Appcelerator’s framework currently allows developers to build native apps for a variety of mobile platforms using a single code base through the use of open web technologies.

Appcelerator says the addition of HTML5 support to the platform – which is pencilled in for the first half of 2012 – will help developers deal with the fragmentation in the app market created by Flash, native app development and HTML5.

Appcelerator also acquired open source development company Aptana in January. Financial terms of the Particle Code deal were not disclosed.
