Google provided its latest update on the penetration of various Android platforms among visitors to its Google Play store, which indicates that its Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean platforms are gaining traction.

According to the company, in the two-week period to 3 December 2012, 27.5 percent of visits were from devices running Android 4.0.X (Ice Cream Sandwich), with 6.7 percent from devices running Android 4.1 or Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean variants).

The figures also show that the share of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is down to 50.8 percent, with the older Froyo at 10.3 percent.

Ice Cream Sandwich got off to a relatively slow start – at the start of August 2012, it accounted for just 11 percent of Google Play visits – but has gained momentum in the interim as more new devices using the platform have shipped.

The company said that 50.1 percent of visiting devices fell into the “normal” size screen (three-to-five inches in size), “hdpi” resolution category. Second most popular, with 25.1 percent, was “normal” size, with “xhdpi” resolution.
