LIVE FROM CES 2013: AT&T pitched its LTE network as the premier platform for consumers and developers this morning, also announcing a new wirelessly-enabled home security system and new developer APIs.

“We’ve got some terrific stuff coming in 2013,” said Ralph de la Vega, CEO of AT&T Mobility at the operator’s Developer Summit in Las Vegas.

He said that the US number-two’s LTE network currently covers 170 million people and is on track to reach 300 million by year-end 2014 under the firm’s $14 billion ‘Project VIP’ plan.

The focus for the current year will be on the operator’s ‘Digital Life’ home security product, mobile payments and connected cars, said de la Vega: “It’s about building mobile solutions that work together seamlessly.”

AT&T plans to launch Digital Life in eight markets in March. Unveiling the product this morning, AT&T’s Glenn Lurie described the product as a “home security and automation service” backed up by 24/7 digital monitoring.

“Home security needs a facelift, but it has huge growth opportunities,” said Lurie. “We want to change the game in this industry.”

He said that less than 20 percent of US households currently have security systems and less than 1 percent have home automation.

On the developer side, AT&T CMO David Christopher announced the new Call Management API “offering developers the ability to create applications using an individual’s AT&T mobile number to access multiple devices.”

There were also two new APIs announced as part of the operator’s ‘Alpha’ programme: a text-to-translation tool (which will let apps translate spoken Spanish words into English text and vice versa); and a customer profile app, which will allow the auto-populating of forms on mobile devices.
