The US spent the most money on apps in July 2013, followed by Japan and South Korea, according to the latest report from app store analytics firm Distimo.

Other big markets were the UK, Australia, Germany, Canada, France, Russia and Italy.

The company noted that in some countries, including Russia, more money was spent in the App Store for iPad than the App Store for iPhone, reversing the general trend.

Over the last six months and across the 18 largest markets, Google Play saw larger growth (67 per cent) than Apple’s App Store (15 per cent).

Google Play now accounts for 33 per cent of total revenue, up from 25 per cent in February 2013, although this still means that the App Store is twice as big as its Android rival.

Top titles

The top 5 free apps in the App Store and Google Play contained a number of similar apps: titles in the Despicable Me franchise from Gameloft were in both stores (and also Amazon’s App Store), as was Candy Crush Saga from King.com.

Facebook and WhatsApp Messenger remained the most downloaded free apps on Google Play.

In terms of paid apps, Minecraft – Pocket Edition by Mojang was the title common across Google Play, App Store and Amazon Appstore.

Candy Crush Saga was the top revenue generator in the Apple and Google stores.

Gameloft was on the top publisher list for free downloads in the Apple App Store, Google Play and Amazon App store, aided by the success of Despicable Me. Likewise, the popularity of Candy Crush saw King.com performing well in the Apple and Google stores.

Rovio, a former mainstay of the charts, currently only holds a top-five position in the Amazon Appstore, with a Kindle edition of Angry Birds Star Wars.

In terms of paid downloads, “Disney was the undisputed number one”, with top position across all three stores.

One million milestone

Distimo ranked new apps on the time it took them to reach 1 million downloads, with three – Pac-Man Dash (NamcoBandai), Monster Doctor (George CL) and Doctor X Med School (Kids Fun Club by TabTale) reaching the milestone in five days.

The country contributing the most downloads for the new apps was the US, which was the biggest market in nine out of ten cases (Hello Kitty Carnival by Sanrio Digital Europe was big in China).
