Rising smartphone star HTC looks set to be a major early player in LTE devices, with reported deals at China Mobile and Verizon Wireless.

Microsoft’s much-anticipated Windows Phone 7 platform will not be available for handsets supporting CDMA networks until 2011, the Wall Street Journal reported, significantly limiting the potential for the platform in Microsoft’s home market of the US.

Taiwan’s HTC – the world’s fourth-largest smartphone vendor – today launched two new devices at a high-profile central London press event, although there was no sign of a Windows Phone 7 device or an Android 3.0 tablet (contrary to industry scuttlebutt in the buildup to the unveiling).

T-Mobile USA has confirmed HTC as the manufacturer of its forthcoming HSPA+ smartphone, the G2. The Android device will be the world’s first HSPA+ smartphone and boasts a 3.7-inch touchscreen as well as a full Qwerty keyboard.

LG Electronics moved further toward its aim of improving its performance in the smartphone market, by announcing new technologies and features which will be used in devices expected to reach the market before the end of 2010.

Amazon is set to add touchscreen capabilities to its Kindle e-reader in a bid to compete with Apple’s forthcoming iPad tablet computer.

Online retail giant Amazon is planning to open up its Kindle e-reader device for new types of content in an apparent move to stave off competition from Apple’s new tablet, reports Dow Jones Newswires.
