5G Core Networks – PaaS/CaaS

To realise the full potential of 5G, mobile operators will need to deploy a truly cloud-native architecture. Within this architecture, both containers-as-a-service (CaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) will play an important role in running the 5G core network functions. Containers create consistent environments to rapidly develop and deliver cloud-native apps that can be deployed across a variety of infrastructure, including private and public clouds.

This paper explains how the CaaS/PaaS layer enables the use of 12-factor micro-services to onboard 5G network functions and run them at scale, across different infrastructure. Designed to deliver a “consumerised IT experience”, the CaaS/PaaS provides an API-based programmable interface to support automation, orchestration and slice management.
