Russian operator MTS aims to become the country’s fourth-largest handset vendor this year, by virtue of its strategy to offer own-brand devices. In a new Frontline interview with Mobile World Live, Mikhail  Gerchuk, VP and chief commercial officer of the country’s largest carrier, said MTS-branded devices “represent about 20 percent of [company] sales” and are the fifth most popular handsets in the country at present (behind market leader Nokia, Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson). Gerchuk noted that its own-brand device portfolio is heavily focused on the Android platform.
