China Mobile calls for embedded WiFi

Chairman Wang Jianzhou used his keynote presentation at Mobile World Congress to detail his company’s WiFi plans (one million hotspots nationwide in three years) as the world’s largest operator looks to avoid a capacity crunch. “We urge all handset manufacturers to provide [an] embedded WiFi connection and make it a default function,” Wang said.

  • Totally agree that using WiFi can provide a very cost effective means to offload user data traffic form the licensed spectrum. The handset vendors need to not only include WiFi in every mobile device they also need to invest more in the reliability and interoperability of their WiFi interface.
