A service that enables users to transfer funds to a mobile wallet from a bank account, and vice versa, is reaching more markets.

Orange and Ecobank, the Togo-based group with a wide presence around Africa, debuted the service in Ivory Coast, Guinea Conakry and Niger, following previous launches in Mali in January last year and Cameroon (August 2015).

Thierry Millet, director of Orange Money, Mobile Payment and Contactless, said “close to €110 million” had been transferred to date between Orange Money and Ecobank accounts.

“This easy-to-use system meets the demands of customers who already have a bank account and who want to use their mobile phones to carry out bank operations, wherever they are in the country and at whatever time of day,” said Millet.

As well as funds transfers, the service allows users to view their bank account balance and obtain mini statements via SMS on their handsets.
