MasterCard said its cardholders will be able to use the Samsung Pay service when it comes to Europe, whenever that might be.

To date, Samsung has stated its mobile payment service will come to the US and South Korea “later this summer”, while remaining coy about plans for other countries. MasterCard is working with Samsung on the US launch.

The current announcement means that holders of MasterCard credit, debit, prepaid and small business cards from participating issuers can activate their cards in Samsung Pay and, using certain devices from the South Korean vendor, make point-of-sale purchases.

This will happen because European card issuers, including banks, will be able to connect to the MasterCard Digital Enablement Service (MDES) platform and activate the Samsung Pay service upon launch, whenever that is.

“With the continued global growth and reliance on connected mobile devices, we are delighted to expand our relationship with Samsung by extending the reach of Samsung Pay and MDES to cardholders in Europe,” said Javier Perez, President of MasterCard Europe.
