Mobile health vendor Glooko has received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its technology that helps diabetics track their glucose levels using an iPhone.

The company also announced the appointment of its first CEO, Rick Atlinger, who previously worked at healthcare portal Intuit Health. Co-founder Yogen Dalal had been acting as interim CEO since the company was established.

The company’s Metersync Cable allows 15 of the most popular glucose meters to connect to the iPhone, while its Logbook app records and presents the data.

The cable and logbook iOS app have received Class II FDA 510(k) clearance after the company previously registered the technology as a Class I device.

The change was made to allow the technology to access data on glucose meters, which are Class II devices. A Class I device is unable to access data from a Class II device. According to MobiHealthNews the clearance cost Glooko $1 million.

Now Class II clearance has been received the Glooko app can present blood glucose data in charts and graphs and allow users to track their food intake and activity levels — information of value to clinicians.

The company is now looking to develop a cable that works for Android devices and is working with the FDA to ensure the same standards are met as the iOS version.
