ZTE is set to offer a device powered by Mozilla’s anticipated Firefox OS in Europe this year, according to Bloomberg, following its expected debut in Brazil.

The report also suggests that a device powered by the platform, which is targeting the entry-level smartphone sector, may make it into the US market.

The platform, which has been backed by operators including Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefonica and Telenor, is first set to be used in a device offered by Vivo, Telefonica’s unit in Brazil.

To date, little information has been revealed about the wider rollout of devices powered by the Mozilla platform.

No potential operator partners for a European rollout were suggested.

According to Bloomberg, Cheng Lixin, head of ZTE in the US, said that “we closely monitor the ecosystem and how it evolves”.

In addition to ZTE, a Firefox OS device is being readied by Chinese device maker TCL (which uses the Alcatel One Touch brand).

Research firm Strategy Analytics has forecast a “niche” 1 percent market share for Firefox OS by the end of 2013.

However, it also noted that “overcoming Android will not be an easy task”, identifying challenges including low brand awareness worldwide, a limited retail presence in the important US market, and a “relatively modest ecosystem of supporting apps and services”.
