SingTel, which runs the largest mobile operation in Singapore, said it will boost mobile data speeds by up to 20 per cent in busy locations through self-organising networks (SON) and small cells.

Tay Yeow Lian, SingTel’s vice president of mobile core engineering, also claimed the extra investment will mean the chances of a dropped call in congested areas – such as shopping malls and event venues – will be reduced by as much as 40 per cent.

“SingTel has invested heavily in its networks to deliver the fastest mobile services in Singapore,” boasted Tay.  “We are the only 4G service provider to offer speeds of up to 150Mb/s and nationwide dual-band coverage.”

SingTel said it’s the first mobile operator in Singapore to implement SON across its entire network.

Small cells, added the operator, will be deployed in locations such as basements and underground car parks. SMEs also stand to benefit through enhanced mobile coverage and capacity in the office.

“We aim to make our networks as future-proof as possible,” added Tay.
