Qualcomm announced that its UK subsidiary will sell the entirety of its L-Band spectrum (1452 – 1492 MHz) to Vodafone UK and Hutchison 3G UK (H3G) in two separate deals, with both companies purchasing 20 MHz of the spectrum.

The deals are together valued at about £200 million ($314 million), according to Bloomberg, which added that the two UK operators may not be able to use the spectrum until at least next year as they wait for upgrades to devices and infrastructure.

“Harmonised and mandated for mobile broadband by the European Union in May 2015, L-Band spectrum can be used for supplemental downlink (SDL), helping operators to meet the global demand for increased mobile data traffic,” said the Qualcomm statement.

Both sales are subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions and all three parties involved will submit applications to get the green light from UK regulator Ofcom.

In May 2008, Qualcomm acquired the frequencies in an auction for £8.33 million in order to “bring a variety of innovative wireless technologies to the UK market” and in October 2013 submitted a request to enable the use of SDL in the frequencies covered by the licence.
