Samsung said around 60 per cent of recalled Galaxy Note 7 devices have been exchanged, with the vast majority of users choosing a new version of the smartphone.

The company gave the figure of 60 per cent for US and South Korea, and 57 per cent for Europe. In Singapore, more than 80 per cent of customers have participated in the exchange programme.

It also said around 90 per cent of Galaxy Note 7 owners have been choosing the same model.

“We are humbled by our customers’ loyalty to the Galaxy Note 7 device,” said DJ Koh, president of the mobile communications business at Samsung Electronics.

In its European statement, Samsung said that 3 per cent of those involved in the recall chose an alternative Samsung Galaxy smartphone – meaning there is also a small proportion who walked away.

It also said that the Euro recall is due to be completed by early October. The device will go on sale again on 28 October, subject to a full completion of the exchange programme.

The South Korean vendor issued its recall after an “isolated battery cell issue”.
