Samsung is reportedly set to launch a rugged version of its latest flagship smartphone, called Galaxy S7 Active.

Website SamMobile said that references to the device are present in the Samsung Level (audio control) app, while a device with a model number similar to last year’s Galaxy S6 Active is also believed to be undergoing tests.

Significantly, improved water and dust proofing are among the key updates to Galaxy S7, meaning the devices are sufficiently robust to survive everyday wear-and-tear. This means the Galaxy S7 is likely to be targeted at users who require more than this – something of a niche market.

Indeed, the company recently highlighted its ability to offer “excellent protection without sacrificing the aesthetics of the phone”, stating specialist devices “come with bulky detachable covers or a clunky design”.

The earlier version of the device also came with a large capacity battery, making it more appealing to heavy users.

Galaxy S6 Active also did not see much in the way of an international rollout: its sole supporter, according to reports, was US operator AT&T.
