An update to the Samsung Gear app added support for the Samsung Pay service for Gear S2 smartwatch owners in the US, revealed Droid Life.

The payments service was previously available to users of the South Korean vendor’s high-end smartphones, but has now reached its smartwatch too, at least in a beta form.

Samsung Pay now matches rival Apple, whose own payment service is available on its smartwatch.

Users must set up a password on the Gear S2 before adding supported debit or credit cards. Even if they have already uploaded cards to Samsung Pay on their smartphone, they must add again for the Gear S2.

As with Samsung smartphones, the smartwatch uses NFC for contactless payment, but does not support MST, the technology which enables the handset to work with older point-of-sale terminals and is an advantage over rivals Apple Pay and Android Pay.

For the moment, Samsung Pay is only available for the Wi-Fi versions of the Gear S2 (rather than 3G versions), and only available in the US.

Support for Samsung Pay has been billed since the smartwatch’s debut, so it was just a question of when it would arrive.
