Motorola took the wraps off its latest-generation Moto G smartphone, which now comes in three variants offering different specifications.

As usual, Motorola is keeping the pricing keen – the standard Moto G will cost £169 in the UK. Pricing for the current device starts at £149 in its cheapest specification.

But while Moto G entered the market offering a high spec for a low price, the segment it is competing in has now become deeply competitive.

The standard Moto G sees an increase in screen size from 5-inch to 5.5-inch, accompanied by a bump in resolution to full HD.

Under the hood, it has seen a bump in many specifications. It has a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 octacore processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB of storage, compared with 1.4GHz quadcore Snapdragon 410, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage or 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage.

Camera resolution remains at 13MP rear and 5MP front.

Further up the list is Moto G Plus. Sharing the same screen and processor, it will be available with 2GB or 4GB of RAM and a 64GB storage option, and the main camera has also been upgraded to 16MP (with two rapid-focus technologies also added).

Moto G Plus also features a fingerprint reader.

And also joining the roster is Moto G Play, a lower cost device which in some ways is a continuation of last year’s Moto G – 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quadcore chip, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and 5MP HD (720 pixel) screen.

It also has an 8MP rear camera.

As before, a wide range of colour and personalisation options are available.

Moto G and Moto G Plus are available now in Brazil, while Moto G Plus is available in India. Both will be more widely available “soon”.

Moto G Play will see global availability later this summer.
