Motorola is set to release an update to its entry-level Moto E smartphone, which in its UK guise is set to retail for less than £100.

The most notable change for the third-generation device is the shift to a 5-inch HD display from 4.5-inches (540×960 pixels) in the predecessor.

In terms of other features, the device is hardly ground-breaking. It features an unspecified “quadcore processor”, whereas the earlier version featured a quadcore Snapdragon 410, and reports suggest it will also continue with a meagre 1GB of RAM.

Onboard storage is also likely to remain unchanged at 8GB, although the device has a microSD slot to provide additional capacity.

The Moto E cameras have seen a bump, however, to 5MP front (from VGA) and 8MP rear (from 5MP).

Battery capacity has been upped to 2,800mAh from 2,390mAh. As with its predecessor, it is splashproof.

The device is likely to reach the market slightly after the £130 Moto G Play, which shares many of the same specifications but with more RAM and onboard storage, and potentially a better processor.

Moto E3 will be available in the UK from early September – release details for other markets have not been confirmed. Moto G4 Play is available mid-August.
